During the first free practice of today, both Williams cars were fastest. Frentzen set the fastest lap time in 1:11.527 followed by Villeneuve in 1:11.638. Michael Schumacher was third in 1:12.265 followed by Irvine, Fisichella and Herbert. Hill was the fastest on Bridgestone tyres in 1:13.074 on position 8.

Jos drove in 1:15.542 to position 20. Salo was faster in 1:14.661 on position 17.
