Max ready for remainder of 2022 campaign: 'Make the most of it'

Published on 25 August 2022 by Stefan Meens

After a revitalising summer break spent with family and friends, Max Verstappen is ready for the second half of the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship, which resumes at Spa-Francorchamps this weekend. The Oracle Red Bull Racing driver has an 80-point lead in the standings with nine races to go.

Despite a comfortable gap in the championship, Max is more focussed than ever. “I don’t think it’s a good idea to take it easy. There are so many things that can go wrong or well. Our intention is to win more races; we want to be the best. That’s how we approach the remainder of the season. We want to be consistent and finish every race. Really, it’s the same approach as the first half of the season.”

The reigning champion added: “Nobody expected such a big points lead. But I don’t think the gap is representative for how the season has gone so far. We haven’t really been dominant in any of the races. The margins were always small, and I don’t think that will change in the remaining races.”

Max therefore does not want to think of a second title. “There’s no point in talking about that because you don’t know what can happen. Everyone will serve grid penalties at some points due to engine swaps. We just have to focus on one race at a time and try to make the most of it.”

This weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix, marks the return to Max’ favourite circuit, Spa-Francorchamps. “I love sector two, with the fast corners. The biggest challenge is Pouhon. It’s always been my favourite track. The best thing is to see so many fans. Of course, it’s a big circuit, but it’s unbelievable to see how much orange there is.”

Despite winning last year’s race after only completing a few laps behind the safety car due to the horendous rain, Spa has not been Max’ best hunting ground. “Because of the high top speeds, it’s never been one of our best tracks, but things are different this year. We’re quick on the straights, so hopefully this will be a good weekend. Of course, the way I won last year, is not the way you want to score a victory, but at least I ended up on the top step with the number one trophy.
