The Italian Grand Prix is won by David Coulthard, second was Jean Alesi and third Heinz-Harald Frentzen. Unfortunately Jos Verstappen had to abandon the race, due to mechanical gearbox failure, in lap 13. Teammate Salo also abandoned due to mechanical problems. At first it looked like Jean Alesi, who started from pole position, would win the race. During the pitstops of Alesi and Coulthard theu traded places however due to problems with changing Alesi's left front wheel.

The champagne for the drivers was handed over by Sylvester Stallone. Stallone was there because he signed a deal today with Bernie Ecclestone to make a Formula 1 movie that will propably make it's debut in August 1998.

After today Michael Schumacher still leads the drivers championship with a 10 point lead over Jacques Villeneuve. In the constructors championship though Williams has closed in on Ferrari and now is only 1 point behind. A race report and an overview of the results and rankings can be found on our season pages.
