Max looking forward to the Mexican GP: 'Our race pace is strong'

Published on 27 October 2022 by Stefan Meens

This weekend, Formula 1 returns to Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez for the Mexican Grand Prix. Mexico City has proved a successful hunting ground for two-time world champion Max Verstappen, who won the event in 2017, 2018 and 2021. Nevertheless, the Dutchman remains realistic: “This generation of cars is so different and I expect Ferrari to be strong. We just need to make sure that we have a good set-up and then we’ll have a good chance to win. Usually our race-pace is strong, and hopefully we can show that this weekend.”

With three Grands Prix to go, both Max and Oracle Red Bull Racing have secured the drivers’ and constructors’ crowns, but the former is keen for more. “Of course, we want to win. We have a great car, so hopefully we can maximise that. We also try to keep learning things about the car that we can hopefully use next year.”

The Mexican Grand Prix is the home race for Sergio Perez, Max’ team mate. “As a team, we want to achieve the best result. It's Checo’s home race, but that doesn’t mean we’re handing out favours. If we finish one and two, everybody will be happy. Checo is good enough to win races by himself and I’m sure he’ll do a good job as a home race is always amazing.”

Perez is looking to secure second place in the championship, a goal that Max hopes the team can achieve. “It’s close, but we’ll go for it. We’ve got a great relationship. He’s a great driver and team mate. We work well together and have a lot of fun.”

Regardless of the outcome of this weekend’s Grand Prix, Max is delighted to be back in Mexico. “It’s amazing to be here, the atmosphere is special. The fans love Formula 1 and are crazy about Checo. It’s definitely one of the best weekends on the calendar.”
