Jos sixth in Condroz Rally: 'But the result is now irrelevant'

Published on 06 November 2022 by Stefan Meens

Jos Verstappen finished the two-day Rallye du Condroz-Huy in sixth place, driving the DG Sport Competition prepared Citroen C3 Rally2. However, the event ended in tragedy as two spectators died and several injured, following one of the participant’s cars leaving the road.

The race organisers stated that the affected spectators were located in a zone that was officially off-limits to the public. Subsequently the stage was neutralised and the remainder of the event abandoned.

"Such a tragic accident is the most awful thing. My thoughts are with the family and friends of those involved”, a shocked Jos said to Verstappen.com. “Sixth place means nothing in the circumstances. The Condroz Rally is a great really, but it’s tragic for it to finish like this. It’s awful.”

Reflecting on his own performance, Jos said: “It’s a difficult rally and I always need to find my way when contesting a stage for the first time. Usually, the second attempt is better because I know the stage better. It was challenging with different kinds of tarmac and mud, especially on slicks. In the end it started raining, which made it really slippery.”

“My co-pilot Renaud Jamoul, really helped me through today and it’s something I’m happy about. Sunday was better than Saturday as I was able to push more and I was closer to the lead. Last year, the Condroz Rally was the first one I went to as a spectator. Now, eight rallies in, I’ve finished P6, so that’s a good result”, concluded Jos, who finished just over four minutes behind overall winner Nikolay Gryazin.
