David Richards, managing director of Prodrive (Subaru world rally championship), said he had failed to move into F1 when his bid to buy Benetton was rejected. Earlier this year he had shown interest but it was made clear to him that Benetton was not for sale. He made his statement after intense rumours that an agreement was on the brink of being signed. Richards said: "It is true that we wanted to do it, but only on our terms and conditions, providing everything was acceptable to us, but that was not going to happen."
