Max does not set a time in rain-soaked FP1

Published on 28 July 2023 by Stefan Meens

Max Verstappen did not set a time in a washed out first practice session of the Belgian Grand Prix, thus ending the session in P20. Carlos Sainz lapped the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit quickest in his Ferrari, followed by the two McLarens of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. Max’ Oracle Red Bull Racing team mate Sergio Perez clocked the fifth fastest time.

In typical Ardennes Forrest fashion, FP1 gets underway in rainy conditions. With qualifying for Sunday’s Grand Prix expected to take place under similar conditions later on the day, some drivers head out for some reconnaissance laps. Alex Albon is the first to do so, with his Williams sporting intermediate Pirelli tyres.

There is very little track action in the first fifteen minutes, but soon after Sainz and the two McLarens opt to steer their cars out of the pits into the treacherous conditions. Both Piastri and Norris set flying laps to top the timing sheets. They are soon usurped by Sainz who sets the quickest time of the session, with the front runners all out on inters.

Meanwhile Max has come out on the full wet compound, but swiftly returns to the pits without setting a time.

At the halfway point, the session is red-flagged. Logan Sargeant has parked his car at Les Combes. As the American tries to brake into the right-left combination at the end of Kemmel straight, something breaks on the Williams and the rookie is unable to steer the car. Sargaent parks up and is able to return to the pits on foot unscathed.

During the red flag, the rain continues and when the session resumes with twenty minutes on the clock, conditions have worsened. Nevertheless, both Red Bulls and Aston Martin head out to get a feel for the circuit. They all do so on intermediates but return to the pits after just one lap. The session finishes with a handful of drivers going out to complete a few practice starts.

Soon after, the FIA announces that if qualifying for Sunday’s Grand Prix cannot take place, that the current championship standings will determine grid positions.
