Max about Austin GP: 'Never thought I would hit 50 wins'

Published on 19 October 2023 by Florence Cobben

Two weeks ago Max Verstappen claimed his third Formula 1 world driver's championship title in Qatar during the Saturday sprint race. After a small party with the Oracle Red Bull Racing Team, Max was prepared for another race that Sunday, which he won.

In Austin, Texas, the title-holder was asked if he could celebrate back home in Monaco: “A little bit with some friends. It was also just nice to be home, before heading into this triple header. So yeah, nothing too crazy.”

Max has won the past two American Grands Prix. Is he the man to beat? “Looking at the season, “yes”, but it’s a sprint weekend, we have to nail FP1 to make sure the car is working well for qualifying, so it’s a bit early to say anything.”

If Max wins this Sunday, it will be his 50th Grand Prix win. A real milestone. “It’s a nice number,” Max says, “I never thought I would hit (50 wins). Now that we’re getting close to it, we should try to expand a bit more. But, we’ll see. It’s more important that we focus on this weekend.”
