Formula 1 announces Sprint calendar for 2024

Published on 06 December 2023 by Misha van der Kroon

Formula 1 has announced which circuits will host Sprint races in 2024, with two new locations set to host a Sprint race. Just like this year, the 2024 F1 calendar will also include six Sprint races. Baku and Spa-Francorchamps, where Sprint races were held this year, will no longer organise a Sprint race next year. They have been replaced by Miami and China, where a Grand Prix will be held for the first time since 2019. Four of this year's locations will return next year: Qatar, Austria, Brazil and Austin. For Austria this means the third Sprint race in three years, and for Interlagos it will be the fourth year in a row that a Sprint race is held there.

The spread on the calendar is similar to this year. Three of the Sprint race weekends take place before the summer break (China, Miami and Austria). The other three (Qatar, Austin and Brazil) will be featured in the second half of the season. This year, Max Verstappen won his third world title in Qatar by finishing second in the Sprint race, which was the first time this has happened in F1 history. Max is also the leader when it comes to the number of victories in Sprint races. He has won seven of the twelve Sprint races held since it was introduced in 2021.

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali on next year's Sprint racing calendar: "Since it was introduced in 2021, Sprint races have helped to increase the audiences on TV, the on-track entertainment and the fan engagement on social media. We look forward to exciting events next year."

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem added: “Shanghai will be a challenge for teams and drivers. The Sprint race in Miami will also add a new dimension to an exciting weekend. We must continue to evolve and adapt to ensure we are doing what is best for the sport. That is why we are working with FOM and the teams to determine the future direction of the Sprint format."
