Max on Adrian Newey departure: 'He's earned much respect'

Published on 02 May 2024 by Florence Cobben

The news that Adrian Newey, Oracle Red Bull Racing's technical director, will depart from the team in 2025 is the talk of the town at the Miami GP. Max Verstappen is in high demand by journalists for his reaction: "We would have preferred that he didn't go, but it is what it is. If someone wants to leave you can't stop them. He's chosing this for himself and his family, and you can't fault him for that."

Max elaborates: "Adrian has ofcourse meant so much to Red Bull Racing and contributed to all it's successes from the very beginning. Everyone in the team will always be thankful for that. He's earned a lot of respect. We remain good friends, forever. But that's part of life. We have a strong technical team, who will continue to work hard. The last couple of years have proved that. I trust them."

Max has been very succesful in Miami, where in 2022 from P3, and 2023 from P9, he managed to win. How important is it to win here for the third time in a row? Max: "I always want to win, on every circuit in the world. We have had a lot of succes in Miami as a team, and hopefully we can continue that streak. I like being in Miami. Ofcourse I'm busy during a Grand Prix-weekend, but I'm looking forward to being on track."

The action in Miami begins on Friday at 18:30 (CEST) with the first and only free training, followed by a sprint qualifying at 22:30. On Saturday, after the sprint race (18:00), qualifying for the race will take place (22:00). The race will start on Sunday 5 May at 22:00 CEST.
