Max ahead of Singapore GP: 'Progress in Baku'

Ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix, Max Verstappen addressed the media in the Marina Bay paddock to discuss all things Formula 1 and how reflects on past performances. “Usually, I rewatch my races to see what I could’ve done better. Sometimes you have a bit more time for this and you can do a deep dive. But the race in Baku is still fresh in my mind, so I’ve not fully rewatched it. It wasn’t my most exciting race either.”

Max finished the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in fifth, with Oracle Red Bull Racing teammate Sergio Perez missing out on a podium on the final lap of the race after colliding with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz. Despite a disappointing-looking result, Max is looking at the positives.

“Of course, we want to keep improving and we’ll have to see when and where this will happen. We want to get the balance right again and Baku was a step in the right direction, so we need to build on that. After Singapore, we have a few weeks until the next round so hopefully we can bring some improvements. There are still a bunch of races that allow us to improve the car, which will also helpful for next year.”

The reigning champion added: “I really want to make the car faster with the team and get a better balance. If we are able to do that, I know we’ll be competitive again. That’s the only thing we can do. If we’re able to perform better, it’ll make our lives a lot easier.”

Looking ahead to this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, Max remains realistic. “Singapore won’t be our easiest weekend. It’s a bumpy track and our car struggles on bumps and kerbstones. But we analysed last year’s race, and we know what we can improve. Last week the car was a bit more stable, so that’s positive”, said the Dutchman who concluded: “A successful weekend for me would mean extending my lead in the championship.”
