Yesterday Mika Hakkinen has set a best time of 1:08.40 at a private test at the circuit Paul Ricard near Castellet in France. He was almost half a second faster than the time that Heinz-Harald Frentzen had set in a previous test. At least the McLaren's have shown to be second to none on the point of speed this year. The circuit Paul Ricard might be sold to Pirelli, the Italian tyre company, to use the circuit for testing the company's road tyres.

Williams concluded a private test program at the circuit of Barcelona yesterday. In the end Jacques Villeneuve was faster than Heinz-Harald Frentzen after 102 laps with a time of 1:22.81. Further testing was also done at Silverstone yesterday and Ralf Schumacher was fastest that day (1:26.51, 45 laps), followed by David Coulthard (1:27.33, 23 laps), Giancarlo Fisichella (1:28.13, 11 laps), Mika Salo (1:29.22, 10 laps), Pedro Diniz (1:30.10, 3 laps) and Damon Hill (1:31.66, 6 laps).
