Mika Hakkinen was the fastest man this week during testing at the circuit of Barcelona. He set the fastest time of 1:21.30 on Friday in his McLaren-Mercedes. Teammate David Coulthard followed him closely with a fastest time of 1:21.49, set on Tuesday. Ralf Schumacher and Damon Hill were third and fourth fastest this week and set their best times of respectively 1:22.47 and 1:22.57 on Thursday and Friday. Surprisingly fifth this week was Toranosuke Takagi who had a best time of 1:22.90 on Wednesday before skidding off the track. Jean Alesi was sixth with a time 1:23.19, set on Tuesday.
