FIA-president Max Mosley has indicated the FIA point of view about tobacco sponsoring might be changed if it can be made likely that tobacco advertising can make people start smoking. If this would be the case, and studies indicate that it is, than a sporting organisation like the FIA would contribute to it. Therefore, Mosley indicated, the FIA might decide unilateral to end tobacco sponsoring in Formula 1, possibly starting in 2002 when the current Concorde agreement ends.
The same Max Mosley has also announced that he would like to increase the number of Formula 1 races per season to 20. The Grand Prix would only be allowed to last 2 days.
Ford is tipped to start supplying two teams with works engines starting next year. According to rumours Ford would like to team up with Benetton (again) because they are concerned about the speed of their return back to the top with Stewart. Stewart reacted: "That wouldn't be correct" of Ford. Stewart has an exclusive deal with Ford until the end of 2001 which states that Ford can only supply other teams with engines at least two specs behind the one of Stewart.
