The Australian Grand Prix was won by Mika Häkkinen. The McLaren driver was handed victory by his teammate David Coulthard who finished in second place. Third was Williams driver Heinz Harald Frentzen. From the start the race was dominated by the McLarens who were miles ahead of the rest this weekend. The two McLaren drivers had made an agreement before the start that, should the situation allow, victory would go to the one who came into the first corner first. Also Häkkinen was punished by miscommunication on the radio which caused him to make an extra pitstop.
