Also in the Warm up the McLaren team was superior. Mika Häkkinen was fastest ahead of his teammate David Coulthard. Following the McLarens were the Schumacher brothers (Michael ahead of Ralf) and Damon Hill. The Williams cars could only be found in the mid-field. Possibly they were experimenting with a high fuel load in order to skip one pitstop and thus close the gap with McLaren.

Benetton renamed the Mecachrome engines to Playlife, a brand of the Benetton clothing company. This Badge deal is possible as in stead of last year Benetton is now paying for the ex-Renault engines.
