Michael Schumacher was fastest today during the first free practice for the grand prix of Melbourne. He drove his fastest lap during the second session in 1:33.826 followed by Mika Hakkinen, Jacques Villeneuve, Alexander Wurz, David Coulthard and Ralf Schumacher. The conditions were very bad on the circuit. Lots of wind with periods of rain. During the very short periods with a dry circuit some drivers were able to set a fast lap time, but also causing the end result to look more like a lottery. The end result showed therefor a disappointing 20th position of Fisichella. Also the position of Rosset (15) was surprising in front of Takagi (19th). There were a lot of discussions going on concerning the braking system of McLaren. They can adjust the braking balance on the steering wheel. According to other teams this should be illegal, however the FIA has approved the system.
