The Grand Prix of San Marino is won by David Coulthard with on second place Michael Schumacher, followed on third by Eddy Irvine.

The race itself was characterized by the many exits of drivers. Even Mika Häkkinen didn't finish the race who had to give up in lap 16. Also the both Benettons didn't finish the race. Alexander Wurz suffered a blown engine while his teammate Fisichella spun of the track in an attempt to pass Frentzen.
