As was to be expected the McLaren's were almighty in the qualifying session of the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola. David Coulthard will start from pole position tomorrow with the fastest time in the qualifying session of 1:25.973. Teammate Mika Hakkinen will start alongside him from second place with a time of 1:26.075. The Ferrari's did well too: Michael Schumacher starts from third position with a time of 1:26.437 and Eddy Irvine starts next to him at fourth place with a time of 1:27.169. Alexander Wurz did well too and starts from fifth position with a time of 1:27.273 and Villeneuve starts from sixth position with a time of 1:27.390.

Until 8 minutes before the end of the session Mika Hakkinen had the fastest time but in his last run David Coulthard went past him and didn't give his pole away anymore. Mika Hakkinen had a another try but in the last section before start finish he made a small steering error. That Imola is heavy on the cars was made clear by the large number of engine blow-up's. At the start of session Rosset blew up his engine. It even look liked he wouldn't make it inside the 107% limit. Luckily for the Brazilian he was fast enough in his ninth lap.

Nakano and Takagi blew up their Ford engines and Damon Hill blew up his engine too in his last lap. For a complete overview of the times you can take a look at our results page.
