Both McLaren's were the cars to beat in the second free Saturday practice session in preparation of the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola. David Coulthard improved his already fast time with almost a second to 1:25.627 and was unrivaled on top of the ranking. Teammate Mika Hakkinen improved his time slightly to 1:26.431. Michael Schumacher was third and Hill and Ralf Schumacher were unchanged fourth and fifth. Giancarlo Fisichella steamed up to sixth place.

The Jordan's of Hill and Ralf Schumacher went our first at the start of the second session. Hill immediately tried the gravel trap at Aqua Minerali but was able to continue his lap. Both Williams' didn't do so well this second session. Jacques Villeneuve even made a quick detour through the gravel and ended tenth. In the last ten minutes of the session Takagi also made a closer inspection of the Italian gravel.
