Today at the first free Saturday practice session both McLaren's were up front again as was to be expected on the fast circuit of Imola. It was David Coulthard who set the best time of 1:26.435 this morning in preparation for the San Marino Grand Prix. Teammate Mika Hakkinen was close behind him with a time of 1:26.691. Williams seems to have found some speed again in light of the third time of Villeneuve and the surprise of the weekend are the Jordan's on spot four (Hill) and five (Ralf Schumacher). Frentzen completed the top six.

The second day in preparation for the Grand Prix of San Marino started out very sunny. Panis took off first at the green light. Pedro Diniz had to park his car besides the track due to a mechanical problem and couldn't set a time. Half way the session Heinz-Harald Frentzen had a little problem and went through the gravel pit damaging his front wing in the process. Mika Salo had to leave his car too after a short outing besides the track. He did manage a good ninth time though this morning. Ricardo Rosset ended his session in the gravel pit too.
