Both McLaren's remained fastest after the second free Friday practice session. Mika Häkkinen was able to improve his time, enlarging the gap to Coulthard on second place. Michael Schumacher did very well, he was third, close behind Coulthard. The top six was completed with Villeneuve, Ralf Schumacher and Fisichella.
