The circuit of Imola appears to be more suitable for the McLaren team. Both cars were much faster then the rest of the field. Mika Häkkinen appeared to be superior with the fastest time during the first free Friday practice session in 1:27.832, followed by David Coulthard at 0.108 sec. It also looks as if Williams is going in the right direction with Villeneuve on P3 and Frentzen on P4. The top 6 was completed with Michael Schumacher and Fisichella. Ferrari experimented with the Tyrrell X-wings. It was clearly an experiment since Irvine was using them, while Michael Schumacher was driving without the extra wings.
