The Argentinian Grand Prix is won by Michael Schumacher who broke the hegemony of the McLaren's with this victory. Second past the chequered flag was Mika Hakkinen and the third place was for Eddy Irvine. The race started with an advantage for David Coulthard who was on pole. Michael Schumacher soon took the lead but gave it away to Mika Hakkinen after his first pit stop. After the first stop of Hakkinen Schumacher took the lead back again and didn't give up his position anymore despite a short outing off the track towards the end of the race.
It was an exciting race with a lot of battles between the drivers. A little bit of rain in the last 10 laps caused some minor outings in the gravel but eventually the victory went to Michael Schumacher. For a complete race report and an overview of the times you can take a look at our season page.
After the race Jos let us know what he thought about the race: "It was a very exciting race, one of the best since times. It is obvious that the technical gap between the teams is closing up again and that is good for Formula 1. Specifically this race we have seen two things that are important. With the new tyre Goodyear is closing the technical gap with Bridgestone again. Besides that the race tactics of Michael Schumacher, Jean Todt and Ross Brawn and his men have again proved to be very good and this was an important factor for Ferrari's victory. I know from my time at Benetton that they are very good with this."
"I have to say that Wurz has again done a very good race. It is a pity that he had a little accident at the end of the race, otherwise he would have been on the rostrum. My compliments go to the team of Benetton that again has had a finish with points. Tyrrell is always good at this circuit and has again shown to be very reliable. Takagi did a very good job but you can also imagine that my hands ache and that I would like to have been there. To be very honest I was not very impressed with the performance of Hill and Ralf Schumacher had bad luck with the rear suspension breakage. I would like to conclude with the remark that both Sauber drivers seem to sweep each other up to unprecedented heights which is good for the total performance of the team."
