The qualifying session in Argentina showed more excitement than we have seen so far this year. For the first time the McLarens were given a run for their money. Davis Coulthard emerged fastest but Michael Schumacher's Ferrari kept Mika Häkkinen away from the front row. The German was quickest 15 minutes before the end of the session. Coulthart put things straight after that by claiming pole. The second row was for Häkkinen and Irvine. The Irish Ferrari driver was in for more but had some bad luck today. On his first run he made a slight mistake causing him to spin. Later on he was heading for pole only to be held up by Arrows driver Pedro Diniz.
