During the first free practice of this season it was for the first time this season not a Mc Laren who was fastest. Michael Schumacher set the fastest time in 1:29.336. The Mc Larens entered the track at the end of the first session. The start of the weekend was disappointing for Sauber, since both cars collided with each other causing Alesi not to be able to set a time.

At the end of the second session, David Coulthard appeared to be the fastest of the day in 1:28.130, followed by Michael Schumacher at almost 1 second. Mika Häkkinen had great difficulties last year with the track. This time he was 1.3 seconds behind his team mate and the third position. The top 6 was completed with Villeneuve, Ralf Schumacher and Irvine. Takagi showed his potential with a very fast lap at the end of the free practice, with a seventh position at the end.
