Both Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard were not able to improve their times during the second session of today free practice. However, both drivers remained the fastest of the day. Johnny Herbert climbed to a very good third time, 1 second behind Mika Häkkinen followed by Eddy Irvine who was just in front of his team mate Michael Schumacher. The top six was completed with Frentzen. Rubens Barrichello set only the 21nd time during the first session, however he was able to improve his time with 2.5 seconds with 7th position as a result. Jan Magnussen however spinned off the track so he was not able to improve his time causing the 22nd and last position.
