During the first free practice on Friday both Mc Larens were by far the fastest on the track. Mika Häkkinen set the fastest time in 1:20.177 followed by David Coulthard at 0.818 sec. The progression of McLaren this season is remarkable since the time of Mika was only 0.7 sec behind his first free practice time last year. Jean Alesi was best of the rest at 2.110 sec followed by Panis, Wurz and Frentzen. Behind the McLaren's the field is very close. Between number 2 (Alesi) and number 12 (Hill) the gap was only 0.7 seconds.
