To be able to win races again Williams has launched a redesign program of the rear end of it's car. Williams hope to have the first part of the new development ready in time for the Spanish Grand Prix. Eventually this will lead to a complete redesign of the rear suspension of the car to try to fix the car's oversteer problem. Williams is also putting pressure on engine supplier together with Benetton to make improvements because the engine is falling behind compared to Mercedes and Ferrari. Improvements on the engine are not expected before the French Grand though.

A new version of the Mugen Honda V10 engine which is in use by the Jordan team is possible ready for use at the qualification of the Canadian Grand Prix early june. This is ahead of schedule because the new version of the engine was initially planned to appear at the British Grand Prix in July. Honda, which is set to return in Formula 1 in 2000 with a works engine, is linked to the Japanese F3000 Dome team. Dome wanted to step into Formula 1 in 1997 but pulled the plug. Dome is still working on the development of Formula 1 car that might possibly be powered by a Honda engine. Honda is also linked with Jordan, Benetton and Tyrrell. Honda considers supplying it's engine to more than one team.
