After seven minutes in the second part of the free practice Michael Schumacher made a trip in the gravel, but managed to return on the track with a 360 degrees spin. Still he decided to return to the pits and stayed in for the rest of the practice.

Several drivers had to quit; Coulthard made a mistake in the chicane, Wurz and Herbert had a blown engine and Tuero crashed.

With nine minutes to go, Mika Hakkinen managed to beat the time of Michael Schumacher with 1:15,613. Eddie Irvine drives out Coulthard of the third spot.

After fifteen minutes Jos Verstappen was fourteenth, followed by Rubens Barrichello on 0,01 seconds. Unfortunately Jos couldn't retain his lead and ended on the eighteenth position with 1:18,451. Rubens Barrichello became fifteenth with 1:18,170.

Jos was satisfied with with the way the free practice this morning went : "This chassis feels definately better than the chassis I tested with on Magny Cours. We are all working to the right way and are finetuning the car. At the beginning I thought I would need three races to get used to everything. If the difference with Rubens in the qualifying this afternoon is less as 6/10 seconds, I'm satisfied."
