The first free practice for the Grand ...

Published on 26 June 1998 by Verstappen Info Page

The first free practice for the Grand Prix of France was unfortunately a bit disappointed for Jos Verstappen. He entered the track as third driver, but during his first out lap, an oil tube near the motor broke causing oil leakage of which some polluted his rear tyres. This caused a spin of Jos at Adelaide, however he was able to keep his engine running and to return with his car to the pits. The new rules of this year say that it is only allowed to use one car during the free practice. Therefor the Stewart-Ford team immediately started to change the engine, however there was not enough time for Jos to enter the track again during the first session.

It was David Coulthard who was fastest during this first free practice session in 1:17.298 followed by his team mate Mika Häkkinen at 0.220 seconds. Both Ferraris were close to the Mc Larens with Michael Schumacher on third at 0.523 and Irvine fourth at 0.730 sec. The top six was completed with Fisichella and Frentzen.
