The warming-up starts on a half-wet track. The cars using Bridgestone tires are expected to have an advantage. The lot of the drivers start on slicks, but most decide to change to intermediates soon. At the moment Ralph Schumacher spins, his brother Michael, who's busy with the rain-adjustment, makes the fastest time. The weatherforecast for the race is rain. As the track dries up, times are getting faster. Coulthard has the fastest time for a while, but eventually it's Heinz Harald Frentzen who books the best time: more than 1 second faster than his teammate Villeneuve.
