Mika Häkkinen secured his first place in the Saturday free practice in the second session a little more by improving his lap time to 1:18.741. David Coulthard realized the exact same time as the Fin, but was classified second because Hakkinen had set the time earlier. Third place was for Michael Schumacher, followed by his brother Ralf, Giancarlo Fisichella and Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
