Jos had a good start at the Canadian Grand Prix. Unfortunately his progression forward was stopped by another failure of the Hart engine. In lap 10 the engine gave up (and Jos ofcourse). Before the race Jos was very confident about the car. Some effectful changes were made before the race. Luckily the team will be testing again before the next French Grand Prix on June 30. Jos has also stated before RTL5 television that the Arrows might be fitted with the new (pneumatic valve) Hart engine before the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 14.

The race was totally dominated by Williams, with Hill leading the race from start to finish, except between his pitstop and that of his teammate Jacques Villeneuve. Jacques finished second and Jean Alesi third. Michael Schumacher had to start from behind because his car wouldn't start at first in the formation lap. He practically tore his engine apart by stressing the engine too much after his first and only pitstop and had to give up in lap 41. Teammate Eddie Irvine was the first to drop out of the race due to technical problems.

Alesi drove a steady race, starting fourth (third actually not counting Schumacher) and finishing third. His teammate Berger was less fortunate. Although he progressed nicely from position 7 towards position 4 he spun his car in lap 42.

Ukyo Katayama, the sympathetic Japanese, spun in lap 6, hitting poor Ricardo Rosset. Both cars ended up damaged besides the track. Mika Salo had troubles during the whole weekend. He had to start the race in his T-car because his 'own' car had a water leak. Salo didn't impress during this race and his race ended in lap 39 due to an engine blow up. Both McLarens did quite well this race. Coulthard being the better one of the teammates ended 4th and Hakkinen ended 5th despite a spin in lap 37. Hakkinen still seems to be troubled by his accident from last year.

Barrichello drove a good race but had to give up early in the race (lap 22) after coming in the pit for the third time with technical problems. Brundle showed that the Jordan-Peugeot is a competitive and very fast car this year. Even though he crashed his car into Lamy's (who had to give up due to this incident) coming out of the pit he still managed to take hold of the sixth position. Lamy's teammate, the very talented Giancarlo Fisichella, drove a steady race and ended 8th and last.
