Villeneuve dominated the qualifying practice for a long time, having set the fastest time early in the session, but Hill in a last effort managed to squeeze out just a bit more, qualifying first. Jos Verstappen had some troubles in the first part of the session but later on he drove to a well done 13th place, putting in mind that this is a circuit for power cars (which the Arrows is not yet). The session was stopped twice for the Benetton brothers. First Alesi spun off the track, causing the first red flag, 17 minutes and 11 seconds towards the end. In the last minute Berger spun off in the same corner as Alesi did, causing the second red flag and the end of the session. See Canadian Grand Prix results for the complete results.
