As was already expected Jacques Villeneuve today announced that he has signed up with BAR for next season. Craig Pollock, BAR's managing director on the announcement: "We are very pleased to have Jacques join us. One of our goals at British American Racing all along was to have the 1997 World Champion racing for us when competition began. His presence in our team will go a long way towards our goal of being competitive in the shortest possible time. Of course, Jacques will honour his current contract with the Winfield Williams team."

Jacques Villeneuve: "I have told every journalist who covers Formula 1 racing in recent weeks that I would go with a team that would allow me to compete at the front of the grid. I know from experience that Adrian (Reynard) and his people can produce a very competitive package, and I am very comfortable with the new Supertec Sport engine. Most importantly, I am very happy to be back with Craig, Adrian and Rick (Gorne) on what is shaping up to be the team of the future. We all share the same philosophy of racing."

BAR will be using Supertec Sports engines for the 1999 and 2000 season. Supertec is the company, directed by Flavio Briatore, that markets the Mecachrome (Renault) engines.
