In the second session of the free training on friday the Williams drivers did remarkably well. They set the third and fouth time (Heinz Harald just before Jacques Villeneuve), only 0.4 second behind - of course - the McLarens, with this time David Coulthard in the lead with the fastest time of 1.25.640, 0.1 second faster than his teammate Hakkinen.

Jos Verstappen improved his first time steadily during the second session, ending 1.1 second faster than his first time, but still on the 16th position. His teammate Rubens Barrichello did even better with 1.28.339 on the 14th place, 0.6 seconds faster than Jos.

Afterwards Jos said: "We are still troubled by understeer in certain corners. We have tried everything on the car but we need some radical changes to solve the understeer problem. My driving style is different than Rubens'. I make corners more angular, just like for example Michael Schumacher, unlike Rubens who takes corners more fluently. This makes that I am more troubled by understeer than Rubens. On the whole though I am satisfied. The gap between me and Rubens stays some 6/10 second. I a made a small mistake this morning by braking too hard before a corner, blocking my tyres, and so I wasted a complete set of tyres."

Eddie Irvine, who spinned of the track in the first lap of his first session, set the 5th time in the second session. Teammate Michael Schumacher was one of the only drivers who didn't improve his time and ended 7th.
