On a cool and wet track (airtemperature 13º and tracktemperature 7º) the first free trainingssession for the Belgium Grand Prix started at Spa-Francorchamps. Fortunately it was dry and it stayed dry. Therefor within a short time the track was driven dry.
On raintyres Jos Verstappen was the fastest driver in a field of eight drivers who dried the track. But after 20 minutes the rest of the field came to participate and Jos had to give his first place away.
Finally the two silver McLarens were the fastest again, with Coulthard in front this time. Michael Schumacher stayed close at only 0.2 seconds. Also Villeneuve did a good job with only 0.224 seconds distance behind Coulthard.
Jos occupied the 18th position at 0.9 seconds behind teammate Barrichello.
