Again both Mclaren's set pole position during the qualification for the grand prix of Germany. Mika Häkkinen was the fastest man today with a laptime of 1.41.838, followed by teammate David Coulthard by only a half second with a laptime of 1.42.347. Surprisingly 3rd became Jacques Villeneuve with a time of 1.42.365. Not less surprisingly were the both Jordan drivers. Ralf Schumacher was 4th and Damon Hill 5th. The big disappointment of the day was Michael Schumacher who didn't do better than 9th place, while teammate Irvine became 6th.

Jos didn't have his lucky day as well. Although he was a second faster than during the morning practice session he didn't came further ahead than a disappointing 19th position. After the session Jos told that he was searching for the right set-up of the car all weekend. In the first run of the session he set a good time because he had copied the set-up of Barrichello. After that he tried different set-up's but they didn't give the desired results.

Jos said that he had given everything but it just didn't work out today. He is absolutely not satisfied with his qualifying position. Although Jos is still a bit troubled by his ear he said that this didn't influence him today. In the third run Jos shot off the track for a short period because he had less downforce than he had expected. Afterwards Jos went to the paddock club to show up for guests of Ford Europe.

Ricardo Rosset did not participate in the qualification after his crash in de free practice this morning. His teammate Takagi spun of twice in the same corner and demolished another Tyrrell.
