The Grand Prix of Italy at Monza ...

Published on 13 September 1998 by Verstappen Info Page

The Grand Prix of Italy at Monza is won by Michael Schumacher in his Ferrari before his teammate Eddie Irvine and his brother Ralf Schumacher. The second doublewin of Ferrari of this season was made after an existing race which started with a quickstart of the two McLarens and a poor start of Michael Schumacher.
In first instance it seemed that the both McLarens were undefeatable but after David Coulthard's engine blow up and Mika Hakkinen getting braking problems, the way was free for the both Ferrari's.
Hakkinen still finished fourth, so Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen now both have 80 point and are both in the lead for the worldchampionship. With only two race to go Bernie Eclestone couldn't wish a greater Worldchampionship end....
Our Dutchman Jos Verstappen had to park his Stewart Ford in the pits with mechanical problems in the 41th lap, after a nice race.

Jos told us after the race, " It went pretty good. I had a reasonable start en didn't lost position. In fact, I even won one place. During the first view laps it was very crowded on the track and I had some trouble with the car, but after a couple of lap it was over. I started on a two-stop strategy and it seems to work fine. The first two sets of tyres were pretty good but with the last stop, we changed the tire pressure. From there it went even better. It's very disappointing that I was unable to finish the race, because I could probably finish on the ninth place. But the team decided to call me in when the gearbox was overheating. They wanted to be sure to have some spare gearboxes for the last two Grand Prix's. It's a shame to end the race like this, but if the team tells you to come in, you have to do so".
