Today, Stewart Grand Prix announced that they will use the services of Johnny Herbert for next season. Johnny will become most likely the teammate of Rubens Barrichello. With this decision, Stewart will for the time being not use the option they have on Jos Verstappen for the 1999 season.
The negotiations between Rubens and the team are still going on for next season, and it's therefor not sure if he will stay with Stewart next year. Huub Rothengatter (the manager of Jos Verstappen) in a first reaction: "This is of course a disappointment and a missed chance. It was both for Stewart and Jos very important to continue their relationship, and to develop next years car. This chance with mutual interest looks to be gone now. Nevertheless, we still have a good working relationship with the Stewart team and that will remain for the rest of the season", according to Huub Rothengatter.
Jos Verstappen: "Although the chance of staying at Stewart is very small, I will do my outmost best during the last three races as always, to show my capabilities. Within the Formula 1 sport it all has to do with going as fast as possible and I know that I can do that. For now I will be keen at possibilities at other teams, and I know I have a good reputation with all teams", according the only Dutch Formula 1 driver.
