Silly season update: Toranosuke Takagi looks like a contender for the Sauber seat of Johnny Herbert next year. Takagi was linked to Honda but since Honda has postponed it's entry in Formula 1 Takagi is available for other propositions. Johnny Herbert though still seems favourite for the seat.

Alessandro Zanardi, who is now starring in the American Champ Car series, looks very close to a deal with Williams for next year. Zanardi, turning 32 on October 23, would regret leaving the Chip Ganassi Racing team, but is appealed by a return to his 'home' in Europe and to star in the major league. Zanardi started in Formula 1 in 1991 for Jordan Ford, drove one race for Minardi Lamborghini in 1992 and drove for Lotus Ford and Lotus Mugen Honda in 1993 and 1994.

Ricardo Zonta, now testdriver for McLaren and Mercedes GT driver, seems close to a deal with BAR in 1999. Mercedes seems to be budging little in letting their protege go and seem to have an 'option' on Zonta.
