Mika Häkkinen fastest of the day

Mika Häkkinen did not have to do a lot to keep the fastest time of the day. Although Eddie Irvine tried to get close to Häkkinen he did not succeed, and Michael Schumacher was concentrating on his car in stead of the fastest lap time. It all resulted in Mika Häkkinen fastest in 1:28.467 followed by David Coulthard, Eddie Irvine, Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher, and surprising Alexandro Zanardi.

Again several drivers had difficulties keeping their car on the track. Takagi had the most severe spin, but remained unhurt. Luca Badoer had other problems. After his return to Formula 1, the car had lots of technical problems forcing Luca to stay in the pits except for a few laps. Mika Salo performed much better during the second session where he set the 14th time.
