The qualification session started with a big question mark for Jos. After the problems in the previous practice sessions it was not clear how qualifying would go. The omen were not very good.

Jos's team mate, Enrique Bernoldi, was first out but came straight back in. He complained about engine problems. Jos was able to finish his flying lap and was only 0.1 seconds slower that Jacques Villeneuve.
This time was broken shortly after, as expected. Jean Alesi and Juan Pablo Montoya were a lot faster. David Coulthard did not manage to improve the time the Colombian had set. The Scotsman's his team mate Hakkinen managed to do so, but that did not stand long. Rubens Barrichello was the first to improve Hakkinen's time. Michael Schumacher also did an attempt but could not match his team mate's time.

After half an hour Jos put himself on 17th on the grid, 1.8 seconds from pole.
Ralf Schumacher was the next one to record fastest time. Almost direct after his brother Michael clocked fastest, first driver under 1.12. For a brief moment Mika Hakkinen had pole again with a difference of 0.002 seconds. In the end it was Michael again who grabbed pole position, his 42nd of his career.

In Jos's third and fourth run his time did not improve, which resulted in a 20th position.
Short after qualifying we spoke with Jos. "During the last two runs the car felt at its best, unfortunately I was not able to improve my time. My last run was hampered by Montoya, otherwise I might have improved my time with 0.2 seconds. I hope to make a good start tomorrow and see how far we will get." according to Jos.
