Pirelli tones down amount of colours to five in 2019

Formula 1’s sole tyre supplier Pirelli has decided to tone down the amount of different colours of tyres to just five. Making it easier to distinguish between the different compounds. The intermediates and full wets will remain respectively green and blue. The slicks will be white, yellow and red. This will make it for the fans easier to track which tyres the drivers are using.

The teams and media will be informed, prior to every event, which compound will be used from the current tyre range. From the current compounds, terms like ‘super-soft’ and ‘hyper-soft’ will no longer be used. These will be replaced by a particular code, but it remains unclear how exactly this code is going to look like.

Although Pirelli has a tyre range of seven different compounds for dry weather, only three compounds are used every race weekend. The array of different colours causes a lot of confusion with fans and is also heavily criticized. The combination that Pirelli will be using every race from 2019 onwards will be just only three different colours. The white striped tyre will be the hardest compound, the yellow the medium and the red striped one will be the softest compound available.
