Max Verstappen caught up with Ziggo Sport’s Olav Mol for another episode of the Formula 1 Café. The Aston Martin Red Bull Racing driver discussed the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as well as an upcoming documentary featuring the Dutchman.
How was the grip on track today? “It wasn’t too bad actually. It was a little bit dusty but it was doable.” Nevertheless, the Yas Marina circuit is not one of Max’ favorites. “Some tracks you like ore than others. Some drivers really enjoy this track. Personally, I’m not a big fan of all those off-chamber corners. It’s not as much fun.”
In free practice, the team tested several 2021 components. Did Alex use next year’s floor? “Yes, I already tried it in Portimao so I said just to throw it under his car.”
Like in Bahrain, the teams were asked to test some of the 2021-spec Pirelli tyres. Max explained his team were not specially going for lap times on the new tyres. “We were just doing long-runs, but I have to say the tyres did feel better here, compared to Bahrain.”
Next week, Ziggo will premiere the documentary Max Verstappen: Whatever It Takes. It is a project Max enjoyed working on. “It tells the story from my beginning in the sport up until now. There is also some personal footage so I’m excited to hear what people think.”
Finally, looking ahead to the remainder of weekend, Max is realistic. “Mercedes is really strong on these types of circuits, the ones that require a lot of rear grip. I don’t expect to mix it with them, so P3 will be the maximum if it’s all normal.”
