On the Thursday ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix, Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen caught up with the media in the F1 paddock of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Before previewing this weekend’s event, round four of the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship, the Dutchman reflected on his race at Portimao last week. Max finished a fine second, despite struggling with the track conditions at the Portuguese venue.
“If we exactly knew what the problems had been, we would’ve obviously addressed them. It’s a bit of guess work. I think the lack of grip didn’t work in our favour. It’s definitely not a track that suit us.”
Three races into the new season, how easy is it to pick up on the strengths and weaknesses of a new car? “The cars continue to be developed so you have to constantly try to make the most of what you have. Of course, there are strengths and weaknesses, but I think it’s mainly about finding a good balance. That’s not always easy.”
The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is seen as a circuit that reveals the true pace and potential of a car, why is that? “Generally speaking, we know how to achieve a good balance around here because we’ve raced and tested here so often. This is a real performance-based track, so if you have a good car, you should go well in Barcelona. We’ll see how strong we are this weekend.”
You drove your first race for Red Bull Racing here in 2016. It was a historic moment because you took the win in your first outing for the team. This weekend, it is your 100th Grand Prix with the team, it would be amazing to win this one. “And of course race 101, 102 and 103”, smiles Max. “In the end, I won’t really look back that I won the first and the 100th race. I just hope to win as many races as I can in a row.”
