Max in Instanbul: 'It doesn't matter if you're the favourite'

Prior to this weekend’s Turkish Grand Prix, Max Verstappen spoke to the media in the Istanbul Park paddock.

With seven races remaining, the title battle is as intense as ever. Max: “I’m relaxed, there’s no point in worrying; you can’t force anything. I know my team, Red Bull Racing, is doing everything they can, and they know I do the same. If it’s enough for the title, we don’t know. But ultimately it won’t change my life, because I’m already doing what I love.”

The Dutchman does not yet dream of a world title. “A title would be great, for everyone. That’s why we’re here. If we’re second, it means we had a good season. That’s why we’re all relaxed, we’re not worried. However, we are very focussed.”

Max does not see himself as the out and out favourite for the title. “I’m not a bigger favourite than Lewis. We just have to make sure we perform well in the last few races. It doesn’t matter if you’re favourite or not. I don’t know if we’ll have the fastest car or if we’ll be trailing a bit. It will depend on the track. It’ll remain close until the end”

Last year, the Istanbul Park circuit was incredibly slippy because of the new tarmac and the rain. Changes have been made to the track surface and the weather predictions are a lot better for this year’s edition. Max: “The lay-out of the track is cool. That’s why I was a bit disappointed with last year’s low grip levels. This track is better with normal grip, so dry. That’s what I’m hoping for.”
