Red Bull Racing eight fastest on Thursday morning

Published on 24 February 2022 by Stefan Meens

After Max Verstappen completed 147 laps on the first day of pre-season testing, team mate Sergio Perez took over driving duties from the world champion on Thursday morning. The Mexican clocked 38 laps of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and the eighth quickest time. Daniel Ricciardo was fastest in the McLaren, followed by Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri).

Like the opening day, the second morning of testing occurs without any incidents as the cars rake up the mileage. That is until Sergio Perez parks his Red Bull in turn thirteen with gearbox problems. The incident prompts the first red flag of the season.

The Red Bull mechanics hasten to their stricken car. They cover up the RB18 as quickly as possible to avoid their competitors getting a good look at the new challenger from Milton Keynes. With twenty minutes to go, the session continues but Perez’ running has been cut short. The team report that the issues with the car are fixed, meaning Perez will continue to drive in the afternoon session.
