Published on 25 September 1998 by Verstappen Info Page

At the end of the the second session of today's free practice it was Mika Häkkinen who was the fastest of the day. The McLarens are equipped with new engines and it looks as if they are doing very well since Mika was the only driver under 1:20 with a time of 1:19.689. He was more then 0.6 sec faster the Fisichella who was surprising second. Villeneuve forced Michael Schumacher even to fourth place, followed by Coulthard and Irvine. The second session was shortly interrupted by a red flag, due to the fact that Takagi's car had to be taken from the pit lane where he had spinned his car.

It looked at first as if Jos Verstappen had a difficult free practice, but ended pretty well. He was able to keep improving his times: 1:24.718 -> 1:24.261 -> 1:23.772 -> 1:23.419 to 1:22.901 at five minutes before the end of the session. In his last attempt he set his fastest time of the day in 1:22.566, good for position 16, in front of Johnny Herbert. Rubens Barrichello set his fastest time early in the second session with 1:21.538 which kept him during most of the session within the top 10. At the end he is found at a well done 11th time
